A delicate nishiki-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting a woman in a rainstorm as a parody of the classical Ota Dokan legend.
Suzuki Harunobu was a pioneer of the nishiki-e, or brocade print, which introduced full-colour printing to the Japanese woodblock medium. This work functions as a mitate-e, a parody or contemporary adaptation of a classical theme. The subject references the legend of the warrior-poet Ota Dokan, who sought shelter from a rainstorm in a humble cottage. A young woman there offered him a branch of yamabuki (kerria) instead of the straw raincoat he requested, alluding to a poem about the flower's lack of seeds.
In this print, Harunobu replaces the historical warrior with a slender, graceful woman. She stands before a thatched-roof structure, holding the yellow-flowered branch. The rain is depicted through fine, diagonal lines etched into the woodblock, creating a sense of atmosphere without obscuring the figures. The composition relies on the delicate balance between the architectural elements of the cottage and the soft, rounded forms of the woman. Harunobu uses a muted palette, allowing the soft red of the kimono and the yellow of the kerria to provide subtle colour accents against the neutral paper tone. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to blend literary allusion with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Edo period. By transposing a well-known historical anecdote into a domestic setting, Harunobu invites the viewer to engage with both the visual beauty of the print and the intellectual exercise of identifying the original source material. The work remains a clear example of the refined, lyrical style that defined Harunobu's contribution to the development of Japanese printmaking.
