A refined Nihonga painting by Uemura Shoen depicting the historical figure Yang Guifei, rendered with delicate brushwork and a balanced colour palette.
Uemura Shoen, a pioneer of the Nihonga style, produced this depiction of the legendary Chinese consort Yang Guifei in 1922. The work demonstrates the artist's technical mastery of traditional Japanese painting methods, specifically the use of mineral pigments on silk. Shoen was known for her focus on the female figure, often drawing from classical literature and history to explore themes of grace and composure.
The composition features Yang Guifei seated, attended by a handmaiden who adjusts her hair. The scene is framed by a shoji screen, which provides a structural element that balances the fluid lines of the figures. Shoen employs a refined colour palette, where the deep blue of the consort's robe contrasts with the muted, warm tones of the interior setting. The application of paint is precise, reflecting the artist's training in the Kano school tradition while incorporating a modern sensibility regarding form and spatial arrangement.
Shoen's approach to the subject avoids excessive ornamentation, instead prioritising the psychological state of the figures. The interaction between the two women is quiet and domestic, despite the historical status of the primary subject. The fine lines used to delineate the facial features and the delicate patterns on the garments demonstrate the artist's attention to detail. This piece remains a representative example of Shoen's ability to synthesise historical narrative with a clean, controlled aesthetic. Her work contributed to the recognition of female artists within the male-dominated art circles of early twentieth-century Japan, maintaining a focus on the dignity and inner life of her subjects.
