A serene study of a wheat field in Paris, featuring rhythmic brushwork and a solitary lark against a pale blue sky.
Painted during his period in Paris, Wheat Field with a Lark captures the artist's engagement with the rural outskirts of the city. Unlike the dramatic, swirling skies of his later works in Provence, this piece displays a more restrained application of paint. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the lower section, rendered in muted ochres and browns, represents the harvested earth, while the upper section depicts a dense, swaying field of wheat.
Van Gogh employs short, rhythmic brushstrokes to convey the movement of the grain under a breeze. The sky is a pale, atmospheric blue, filled with light, horizontal strokes that suggest a gentle wind. A single lark is suspended in the centre of the composition, providing a small point of focus against the vastness of the field. The palette is relatively subdued, relying on variations of green, yellow, and blue to create a sense of natural harmony.
This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the observation of nature and his technical experimentation with colour theory. By placing the horizon line low, he allows the wheat field to dominate the visual space. The inclusion of small red poppies within the green stalks adds subtle contrast to the otherwise cool and earthy tones. The painting reflects a moment of relative calm in the artist's career, focusing on the textures and light of the French countryside. It remains a clear example of his ability to translate the physical sensation of a summer day onto the canvas through deliberate, repetitive mark-making.
