A 1968 screenprint by Patrick Caulfield, featuring a minimalist, graphic depiction of a wall lamp using flat colour and bold outlines.
Patrick Caulfield, a central figure in British Pop Art, produced Wall Lamp in 1968. This screenprint demonstrates his characteristic approach to the depiction of everyday objects. Caulfield strips the subject of its domestic context, presenting the lamp as a graphic icon rather than a functional item. The composition relies on flat planes of colour and bold, black outlines, which were hallmarks of his practice throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
The image features a simplified lantern form set against a stark, neutral background. A large, dark shadow dominates the space behind the lamp, creating a sense of depth that is simultaneously flattened by the artist's use of hard-edged shapes. The inclusion of a small sliver of yellow light provides the only indication of the lamp's purpose, yet this detail remains secondary to the overall geometric arrangement. Caulfield often utilised commercial printing techniques to achieve these clean, uniform surfaces, distancing his work from the expressive brushwork typical of earlier painting traditions.
By isolating the wall lamp, Caulfield invites the viewer to consider the object as a formal construction. The work avoids narrative or emotional content, focusing instead on the relationship between line, shape, and negative space. This print reflects the artist's interest in the tension between reality and representation, a theme he explored across his career. The deliberate lack of texture and the precise application of ink result in a clinical, detached aesthetic. This piece remains a clear example of his ability to transform mundane subjects into rigorous exercises in visual composition, maintaining a balance between the recognisable and the abstract.
