A geometric wall installation by Sol LeWitt, featuring rhythmic bands of colour and precise, rule-based composition.
Wall Drawing #1136, executed in 2004, represents the systematic approach to art production characteristic of Sol LeWitt. LeWitt removed the physical act of the artist from the final execution, preferring to provide a set of instructions or a diagram that others could follow. This method prioritised the concept over the manual labour of the creator. The work consists of bands of colour arranged in specific sequences, creating a rhythmic, undulating visual experience across the architectural surface.
The composition relies on a precise arrangement of vertical and curved lines. These forms interact with the physical dimensions of the room, turning the wall into a site-specific installation. The use of a saturated, multi-coloured palette creates a sense of movement and energy. By applying these bands directly to the wall, the work integrates with the environment rather than existing as a separate object hung upon it. This approach reflects the artist's interest in modular systems and the logic of repetition.
LeWitt's practice often involved the use of basic geometric shapes and primary colours to explore spatial relationships. In this instance, the interplay between the straight vertical lines and the sweeping curves generates a tension that defines the space. The work does not rely on traditional painterly techniques or personal expression. Instead, it functions through the clarity of its rules and the precision of its application. This print captures the essence of the original installation, allowing the viewer to engage with the geometric rigour and chromatic structure of LeWitt's design in a domestic or professional setting.
