A classic bijin-ga woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro, featuring the courtesan Wakaume and her two young attendants.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro depicts Wakaume, a high-ranking courtesan from the Tamaya establishment in the Edo-cho district, accompanied by her two young attendants, Mumeno and Iroka. Produced during the mid-1790s, the work exemplifies the artist's mastery of the bijin-ga genre, which focused on the portrayal of beautiful women. Utamaro was known for his innovative approach to portraiture, often employing the okubi-e (large-head) format to capture the psychological presence of his subjects.
The composition is balanced, with Wakaume positioned as the primary figure. Her gaze is directed away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation. The two children are partially obscured by her kimono, creating a sense of depth and interaction within the frame. The artist uses a refined line quality to define the contours of the figures and the delicate patterns of their garments. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft pinks, muted greens, and black, which allows the focus to remain on the expressive features of the faces.
Utamaro's work was highly regarded for its ability to convey the fashion and social dynamics of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The inclusion of the attendants provides a narrative element, hinting at the hierarchical structure of the courtesan's world. The print is a characteristic example of the nishiki-e (brocade print) technique, which utilised multiple woodblocks to achieve a sophisticated range of colours and textures. The calligraphy in the upper left corner provides context regarding the identity of the subjects, a common feature in prints of this period intended for a knowledgeable audience. This piece remains a clear representation of the aesthetic values prevalent in late eighteenth-century Japan, where the depiction of urban celebrities was a primary subject for printmakers.
