A mid-century abstract composition by British artist Victor Pasmore, featuring geometric forms and tactile paint application.
This work by Victor Pasmore represents the shift in his practice from the representational subjects of his early career to the geometric abstraction that defined his later years. Pasmore, a figure in the development of British modernism, moved away from the figurative traditions of the Euston Road School to explore the formal properties of shape, colour, and spatial arrangement.
The composition features a series of distinct geometric forms, including squares and triangles, set against a dark, atmospheric ground. The application of paint is tactile, with visible brushwork that creates a sense of depth and texture across the surface. The palette combines muted earth tones with sudden, deliberate accents of primary colours, such as the red circle and the yellow square. These elements are arranged to create a balance between the flat surface of the board and the implied space created by the overlapping shapes.
Pasmore was interested in the relationship between the viewer and the object, often treating the canvas as a construction of visual logic. This piece demonstrates his interest in the interplay of light and dark, as well as the tension between structured geometry and organic, painterly application. The work avoids narrative content, instead inviting the viewer to engage with the arrangement of forms and the physical quality of the paint itself. It is a characteristic example of his mid-century output, where he sought to strip away external references to focus on the fundamental components of visual language. The signature VP is visible in the lower right corner, confirming the artist's hand in this exploration of non-objective form.
