A satirical lithograph by Honoré Daumier from the La Comédie Humaine series, depicting an awkward debt collection encounter inside a Parisian omnibus.
This lithograph is part of the series titled La Comédie Humaine, published in the French periodical Le Charivari. Honoré Daumier, a master of social observation, captures a moment of social friction within the confined space of a Parisian omnibus. The scene depicts two men seated side by side, their body language conveying a palpable sense of unease and mutual recognition. The caption below the image provides the narrative context: one man confronts the other, identified as Monsieur Alfred, regarding an outstanding debt of nine hundred francs that has remained unpaid for three years. The debtor, visibly flustered, curses the omnibus and his tailor, wishing he had chosen a private cabriolet instead to avoid this public confrontation.
Daumier employs his characteristic lithographic technique to define the figures, using varied line weights to suggest the texture of their clothing and the cramped interior of the carriage. His approach to caricature is grounded in the observation of contemporary Parisian life, focusing on the mundane interactions of the bourgeoisie. The composition is structured to emphasise the awkward proximity of the two subjects, with the surrounding passengers serving as silent witnesses to the exchange. The work functions as a sharp social commentary on the financial anxieties and social pretences of the mid-nineteenth-century middle class. By placing the figures in a public transport setting, Daumier highlights the lack of privacy in urban life, where chance encounters often force individuals to confront their past obligations. The print reflects the artist's ability to distil complex human emotions, such as embarrassment and indignation, into a single, static frame.
