A late work by Vincent van Gogh, depicting two figures working in a snow-covered field with his signature expressive brushwork.
Painted in 1890 during his final months in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this work captures the physical labour of rural life. Vincent van Gogh depicts two figures bent over the frozen earth, their forms integrated into the rhythm of the field. The composition relies on heavy, directional brushwork that conveys both the cold atmosphere and the movement of the figures against the snow-covered ground.
The palette is dominated by cool blues, whites, and touches of green, which contrast with the warm, circular sun positioned near the horizon. This sun, a recurring motif in his later work, provides a sense of scale and temporal context to the scene. The sky is rendered with swirling, rhythmic strokes that echo the texture of the snow below, creating a unified surface across the canvas. The cottages in the distance are suggested through minimal, blocky forms, keeping the focus on the repetitive, arduous task performed by the women.
Van Gogh often returned to the subject of peasant life, a theme that occupied his thoughts from his early years in the Netherlands through his time in France. Here, the application of paint is thick and deliberate, characteristic of his late style. The work avoids sentimentality, focusing instead on the raw interaction between the human figure and the environment. It remains a clear example of his ability to transform a mundane agricultural scene into a study of colour and motion.
