A masterful 1518 engraving by Albrecht Dürer, depicting the Virgin and Child surrounded by a celestial choir of angels.
Albrecht Dürer produced this engraving in 1518, a period when his mastery of the burin reached its zenith. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, who holds an apple, a traditional symbol of the fall of man and his subsequent redemption. They are positioned at the centre of a celestial gathering, encircled by a multitude of angels who offer musical accompaniment, fruit, and vessels of water. Two larger angels hover above, poised to place a crown upon the Virgin's head.
Dürer employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define form and texture. The drapery of the Virgin's robes is rendered with fluid, rhythmic lines that suggest weight and volume, while the varied expressions and postures of the angels demonstrate his keen observation of the human figure. The background is kept relatively spare, allowing the focus to remain on the central group and the atmospheric quality of the light radiating from behind the Virgin.
This work reflects the technical precision characteristic of Dürer's mature period. The artist's monogram and the date are clearly visible at the bottom left, a standard practice for his prints. The engraving demonstrates his ability to translate complex theological themes into a highly structured visual language. The balance between the earthly presence of the figures and the divine nature of the scene is achieved through the careful arrangement of the angelic choir, which frames the Virgin and Child in a triangular formation. This print remains a primary example of the high level of detail achievable through metal engraving during the early sixteenth century, showcasing the artist's control over the medium to create depth and tonal variation without the use of colour.
