A quiet, narrative scene by Horace Pippin depicting a hunter in an autumnal forest, rendered with the artist's characteristic directness and structural clarity.
Horace Pippin, a self-taught American painter, created The Squirrel Hunter during a period of significant recognition for his work. His approach to painting is characterised by a direct, honest application of pigment and a focus on memory and personal experience. In this composition, a solitary figure stands at the edge of a dense, autumnal woodland. The trees are rendered with a rhythmic, almost graphic quality, their dark trunks creating a vertical screen that contrasts with the golden foliage above.
Pippin often utilised a flattened perspective, which gives his work a distinct, immediate presence. The hunter, positioned to the left, is integrated into the environment rather than separated from it. The ground is covered in fallen leaves, rendered with small, deliberate strokes that suggest the texture of the forest floor. The colour palette is dominated by deep browns, ochres, and muted greens, reflecting the transition of the seasons.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who sought to capture fleeting light or atmospheric effects, Pippin focused on the structural clarity of his subjects. His work avoids unnecessary detail, opting instead for a simplified form that communicates the essence of the scene. The figure of the hunter, though small in relation to the towering trees, provides a sense of scale and human narrative. This piece demonstrates his ability to transform everyday observations into a cohesive visual statement. The composition relies on the interplay between the dark, vertical lines of the forest and the softer, more organic shapes of the foliage. It is a quiet, contemplative work that captures a specific moment in time through a unique, personal lens.
