A masterful black chalk drawing by Michelangelo, depicting the mythological punishment of Tityus, created as a gift for Tommaso dei Cavalieri.
This drawing, executed in black chalk, depicts the mythological figure of Tityus, who was condemned to have his liver eaten by an eagle for eternity as punishment for his attempted assault on Leto. Michelangelo created this work as a gift for Tommaso dei Cavalieri, a young Roman nobleman for whom he held deep affection. It belongs to a series of 'presentation drawings' that were intended as private tokens of friendship rather than preparatory sketches for larger commissions.
The composition focuses on the physical struggle between the human form and the bird of prey. Michelangelo employs precise, controlled lines to define the musculature of Tityus, who is shown in a contorted, reclining position. The eagle, with its wings spread wide, dominates the upper portion of the sheet, creating a sense of tension and movement. The artist uses subtle shading to model the figures, giving them a sculptural quality that is characteristic of his approach to the human body. The background remains largely empty, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the anatomical detail and the dramatic narrative of the scene.
This work demonstrates Michelangelo's mastery of the human figure and his ability to convey intense emotion through posture and gesture. The drawing is currently held in the Royal Collection, having been part of the collection of the British monarch for centuries. It remains a primary example of the artist's skill in graphic media, showing his capacity to produce finished, autonomous works on paper that possess the same gravity as his monumental sculptures or frescoes. The clarity of the line work and the anatomical accuracy reflect the artist's lifelong study of the human form, providing a clear view into his technical process and his personal artistic interests during the 1530s.
