A powerful Post-Impressionist interior by Vincent van Gogh, capturing the unsettling atmosphere of a late-night café in Arles through clashing colours.
Painted in Arles in September 1888, The Night Café depicts the interior of the Café de la Gare. Van Gogh sought to express the terrible passions of humanity through the use of colour. He described the room as a place where one can ruin oneself, go mad, or commit a crime. The composition is dominated by blood-red walls and a ceiling of sombre green, creating a jarring contrast that pushes against the boundaries of naturalistic representation.
The perspective is steep and unsettling, drawing the eye toward the back of the room where a doorway leads into darkness. A billiard table sits in the centre, casting a long, heavy shadow across the floorboards. The gas lamps, rendered with thick, radiating brushstrokes, cast a sickly, haloed light over the few patrons slumped at tables. The proprietor, dressed in white, stands near the billiard table, observing the scene with a detached air.
Van Gogh applied paint with thick, deliberate strokes, often leaving the canvas texture visible beneath the pigment. This technique adds a physical weight to the work, mirroring the oppressive atmosphere of the environment. The choice of colours is not intended to replicate reality, but to evoke a specific emotional state. The clashing tones of red and green, paired with the yellow floor, generate a sense of unease and tension. This work remains one of the most analysed examples of the artist's ability to manipulate colour for psychological effect, moving away from the observational methods of his contemporaries toward a more subjective, expressive mode of painting.
