A classic Impressionist study of the Giverny garden, featuring the iconic Japanese bridge and water lilies in a soft, atmospheric palette.
Claude Monet painted this work in 1900, capturing the garden he constructed at his home in Giverny. The composition focuses on the arched wooden bridge, a structure inspired by Japanese prints that Monet collected. The water-lily pond sits below, reflecting the surrounding foliage and the changing light of the day.
Monet applied paint in short, broken strokes, a technique that allows the eye to blend colours optically. The palette consists of deep greens, earthy browns, and soft pinks, which represent the water lilies and the weeping willow branches. The bridge spans the upper third of the canvas, creating a horizontal line that contrasts with the verticality of the vegetation.
This painting belongs to a series of works Monet produced between 1899 and 1900, all depicting the same bridge from various angles and under different atmospheric conditions. By this period, Monet had moved away from the sharp outlines of his earlier work, favouring a more atmospheric approach where the distinction between the water surface and the reflected sky becomes blurred. The focus is on the interplay of light and colour rather than the precise rendering of form. The painting demonstrates his interest in the garden as a controlled environment, which he could observe and record repeatedly. The result is a study of light that captures a specific moment in time, reflecting the artist's preoccupation with the transient nature of visual perception.
