A detailed eighteenth-century engraving depicting two biblical scenes from the Acts of the Apostles, rendered with classical precision.
This engraving presents two distinct biblical narratives from the Acts of the Apostles, rendered with the precision characteristic of eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking. The upper register depicts the Descent of the Holy Spirit, or Pentecost, where figures are gathered in an interior space, their expressions and gestures conveying a sense of collective awe. The artist employs a balanced composition, using light and shadow to direct the viewer toward the central figures.
The lower register illustrates the healing of the lame man by Peter and John. This scene is set against a classical architectural backdrop, featuring columns that provide a sense of order and spatial depth. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner, a common device in Neoclassical art to maintain clarity and narrative focus. The interaction between the apostles and the supplicant is rendered with careful attention to anatomical detail and drapery, reflecting the technical rigour of the period.
As a publication by the Luchtmans firm, this print likely served as an illustrative plate for a scholarly or religious volume. The engraving technique relies on fine, controlled lines to create texture and volume, avoiding excessive ornamentation in favour of narrative legibility. The inclusion of bilingual captions in Dutch and French suggests a broad European audience for such theological texts. This work provides a clear example of how religious iconography was disseminated through print media during the Enlightenment, combining traditional subject matter with the structured, rational aesthetic of the era. The print remains a record of the intersection between theological study and the craft of the engraver in the Netherlands.
