A classic Post-Impressionist study of the Alpilles mountains and olive groves, rendered with the characteristic rhythmic brushwork of Vincent van Gogh.
Painted in 1889 during his stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this work captures the rugged terrain of the Alpilles mountain range. Vincent van Gogh produced a series of canvases focusing on the olive groves surrounding the facility, finding in their gnarled trunks and silver-green foliage a subject that allowed for intense experimentation with colour and form.
The composition is dominated by the rhythmic, swirling application of paint. The olive trees in the foreground are rendered with dark, sinuous outlines that echo the undulating movement of the ground. Van Gogh employs a palette of olive greens, pale yellows, and deep blues to define the relationship between the earth and the distant, craggy peaks. A single, elongated cloud stretches across the sky, providing a horizontal counterpoint to the vertical energy of the trees.
Technically, the work demonstrates the artist's mature style, where individual brushstrokes remain visible, creating a textured surface that conveys physical energy. The mountains are simplified into bold, rhythmic shapes, moving away from strict naturalism toward a more expressive interpretation of the Provençal environment. The contrast between the cool, shadowed mountains and the warmer, sun-drenched foreground creates a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective. This piece reflects the artist's preoccupation with the cycles of nature and his ability to transform a specific location into a highly personal visual statement. The work remains a primary example of his late period, where his control over line and colour reached a state of heightened clarity.
