A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu II, depicting two Kabuki actors in a theatrical pose from the Negura sanpukutsui triptych.
This woodblock print originates from the Torii school, a lineage of artists closely associated with the Kabuki theatre in Edo-period Japan. Torii Kiyonobu II produced this work as part of the triptych Negura sanpukutsui, which translates to Three Lucky Pictures for the Sleeping Place. The print depicts two prominent Kabuki actors, Onoe Kikugoro I and Sanogawa Ichimatsu I, positioned beneath a large umbrella.
The composition reflects the aesthetic conventions of early eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e. The figures are rendered with bold, sweeping lines that define their posture and the folds of their elaborate kimono. The artist employs a limited colour palette, characteristic of the benizuri-e or early hand-coloured prints of the era. The actors are shown in a moment of interaction, their expressions and gestures conveying the stylised drama of the stage.
Behind the figures, a suggestion of a flowering tree provides a delicate backdrop, contrasting with the strong, graphic quality of the actors' attire. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy serves both as a decorative element and as a means of identifying the performers and the specific production. The Torii school was known for its role in creating promotional materials for theatres, and this print functions as a visual record of the celebrity culture surrounding Kabuki actors at the time. The work demonstrates the technical development of the woodblock medium, moving from simple monochrome designs toward the more nuanced, multi-coloured prints that would define the later Ukiyo-e period. This piece offers a view into the intersection of popular entertainment and visual art in historical Japan, capturing the poise and theatricality of the Kabuki stage.
