A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, capturing a rainy day at tea-houses along the Tadasu River in Kyoto.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts a scene from the series Famous Views of Kyoto. The composition captures the Tadasu River during a sudden downpour. Hiroshige employs diagonal lines to represent the rain, a technique that creates a sense of movement and atmosphere across the paper. The scene shows figures hurrying for cover, their umbrellas providing small pockets of colour against the grey, wet environment.
The tea-houses, situated along the riverbank, offer a refuge from the weather. Patrons are visible inside, resting on tatami mats, while others cross a wooden bridge in the foreground. The architecture of the buildings is rendered with precision, showing the open-sided structure typical of such establishments. The trees, with their dark, textured foliage, frame the scene and add depth to the composition.
Hiroshige was a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, particularly known for his ability to convey weather conditions and seasonal changes. His work often focused on the relationship between human activity and the natural world. This print demonstrates his skill in balancing the structural elements of the buildings with the fluid, transient nature of the rain. The palette is restrained, relying on blues, greens, and earthy tones to evoke the damp, cool air of a rainy day in Kyoto. The print is a fine example of the technical capabilities of the woodblock medium during the Edo period, where multiple blocks were used to achieve the subtle gradations of colour and the crisp lines of the rain.
