A detailed historical etching by François Bohn depicting street combat in Nijmegen, capturing the tension of civil conflict with precise line work.
This etching depicts a scene of civil unrest in Nijmegen, dated to 1703. François Bohn, a Dutch artist active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, captures the chaotic nature of street combat with technical precision. The composition focuses on a clash between armed groups in front of a large, multi-storey Dutch building. The architecture is rendered with clean lines, reflecting the typical urban style of the period, while the foreground is filled with figures engaged in active conflict.
Smoke from muskets obscures the lower portion of the building, creating a visual divide between the static, orderly architecture and the dynamic, violent action of the crowd. The figures are depicted in various poses of aggression and retreat, with several individuals fallen on the cobblestone ground. Bohn uses fine hatching to create texture on the building facades and to suggest the density of the smoke. The work functions as a historical record, documenting a specific moment of local conflict through the medium of printmaking.
Bohn was known for his ability to translate historical narratives into visual form. His approach to this scene avoids romanticisation, opting instead for a descriptive, reportage style. The print provides a clear view of the weaponry and attire of the era, offering insight into the material culture of the early eighteenth century. The contrast between the rigid, vertical lines of the architecture and the irregular, chaotic arrangement of the figures creates a sense of tension. This piece is a representative example of how historical events were disseminated to the public through printed media during the period, serving as a visual account of civil strife in the Netherlands.
