A study of white roses and sunflowers in a green vase, painted by Vincent van Gogh during his transformative period in Paris.
Painted during his time in Paris, this work captures the artist's exploration of colour theory and brushwork. Vincent van Gogh moved to Paris in 1886, where he encountered the work of the Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists. This exposure shifted his palette from the dark, earthy tones of his earlier Dutch period to the brighter, more saturated colours seen here.
The composition features a green ceramic vessel filled with a dense arrangement of white roses and yellow sunflowers. The background is a textured, warm red, which contrasts with the green of the vase and the table surface. Van Gogh uses thick, impasto brushstrokes to build the form of the flowers, giving the petals a physical presence on the canvas. The light appears to come from the upper left, casting subtle shadows and defining the rounded shapes of the roses.
This painting demonstrates his interest in the decorative potential of floral subjects. By placing the flowers against a bold, non-naturalistic background, he creates a sense of tension between the objects and the space they occupy. The application of paint is energetic, with visible strokes that follow the contours of the leaves and petals. This technique allows the viewer to trace the movement of the artist's hand across the surface. The work remains a clear example of his transition toward the expressive, colour-focused style that would define his later years in the south of France.
