A classic Flemish Baroque still life by Frans Snyders, featuring game birds, a basket of grapes, and fine porcelain.
Frans Snyders, a master of the Flemish Baroque, specialised in large-scale compositions featuring animals, hunting trophies, and abundant produce. This work displays his technical command over textures, from the soft plumage of the dead game birds to the translucent skins of the grapes. The composition is anchored by a wicker basket overflowing with fruit, positioned beside a Wan-Li porcelain bowl containing crayfish.
Snyders often collaborated with Peter Paul Rubens, providing the animal and still-life elements for the latter's larger historical or mythological scenes. In his independent works, Snyders focused on the material presence of his subjects. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the period, casting deep shadows that push the objects forward against a dark, neutral background. This arrangement allows the viewer to observe the specific qualities of each item, such as the metallic sheen on the glassware and the tactile surface of the woven basket.
Such paintings were highly sought after by the merchant classes of Antwerp, who valued the display of material wealth and the artist's ability to render nature with precision. The inclusion of imported porcelain and fine glassware indicates the global trade connections of the era. Snyders avoids moralising narratives, preferring to celebrate the physical world through careful observation and a disciplined application of paint. The result is a balanced, heavy composition that captures the sensory experience of a seventeenth-century larder.
