A delicate ink and colour study of shrimp swimming amongst aquatic plants, rendered on silk in the traditional Japanese kachō-ga style.
This work by Seki Shūkō presents a study of four shrimp moving through aquatic vegetation. The artist employs a muted palette, relying on subtle washes of ink and light colour to suggest the depth of water. The silk support provides a soft, porous texture that absorbs the ink, creating a sense of diffusion and atmospheric calm. Each shrimp is rendered with precise, controlled brushwork, capturing the segmented bodies and long, delicate antennae that define the creature's form. The surrounding water weeds are depicted with lighter, gestural strokes, providing a sense of movement without overwhelming the primary subjects.
Seki Shūkō operates within the tradition of kachō-ga, or bird-and-flower painting, which frequently extended to include insects and aquatic life. The composition is balanced, with the shrimp positioned to guide the viewer's eye across the silk surface. The negative space is utilised to suggest the vastness of the underwater environment, a common technique in East Asian ink painting to evoke a specific mood or setting.
