A refined woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting an intimate interior scene at a Tokaido road station, featuring two women by an andon lamp.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a quiet interior scene at Shono, one of the fifty-three stations along the Tokaido road. Unlike the more famous landscape series by Utagawa Hiroshige, which focuses on the external environment and weather conditions of the route, Hokusai here directs his attention to the domestic activities within a roadside inn. Two women are shown in a sparsely furnished room, illuminated by a tall, rectangular andon lamp. One woman sits near the lamp, her form partially obscured by the light fixture, while the other focuses on her needlework.
The composition is defined by clean lines and a restrained use of colour. Hokusai employs a muted palette, typical of early nineteenth-century surimono or smaller print series, which allows the viewer to focus on the subtle interactions between the figures and their immediate surroundings. The presence of calligraphy in the upper left quadrant integrates text with the visual narrative, a common practice in Ukiyo-e prints that often provided poetic context or identified the specific location.
The print demonstrates Hokusai's ability to capture intimate, everyday moments with precision. The architectural elements, such as the sliding paper screens, provide a sense of structure and depth to the otherwise simple room. The focus remains on the quietude of the scene, offering a glimpse into the life of travellers and inn staff during the Edo period. This work is a fine example of the artist's versatility, showing his skill in depicting human figures and interior spaces with the same care he applied to his more widely recognised natural subjects. The print remains a valuable record of the social history and aesthetic preferences of the era, presented through the refined technique of traditional Japanese woodblock printing.
