An evocative etching by James McNeill Whistler, depicting his nephew Arthur Haden standing beside a large tree, from the artist's celebrated French Set.
This etching, titled Seymour, depicts Arthur Haden, the young nephew of the artist. It belongs to the French Set, a collection of twelve etchings produced by James McNeill Whistler during his early years in Europe. The work demonstrates his technical proficiency with the copper plate, utilising varied line weights to define the texture of the tree bark and the soft fabric of the boy's clothing.
Whistler captures the subject in a moment of quiet observation. The boy stands against a large, gnarled tree, his gaze directed upward. The composition relies on the contrast between the verticality of the figure and the rugged, organic form of the tree trunk. Whistler employs cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, particularly in the lower portion of the print where the ground meets the base of the tree. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the child and his immediate environment.
As a practitioner of the etching medium, Whistler sought to elevate the status of the print. He moved away from the highly finished, academic style of his contemporaries, preferring a more spontaneous approach that prioritised the quality of the line. This print reflects his interest in the everyday lives of his subjects, a common theme in his early graphic work. The plate shows the artist's signature in the lower corner, a standard practice for his published editions. The work remains a fine example of nineteenth-century printmaking, demonstrating the artist's ability to convey mood through minimal means. The paper tone and ink application contribute to the overall atmospheric quality of the piece, which is characteristic of the prints produced during his time in Paris and London.
