A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring cargo ships navigating the waters off Kazusa Province with a distant view of Mount Fuji.
Sea Lane off Kazusa Province is a notable woodblock print from the series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Produced during the Edo period, this work demonstrates Hokusai's mastery of composition and his application of Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become available to Japanese artists. The print depicts two large cargo vessels, known as sengokubune, navigating the waters off the coast of Kazusa Province.
The composition is defined by the contrast between the structural geometry of the wooden ships and the expansive, calm horizon. Hokusai places the vessels in the foreground, their sails catching a gentle breeze, while the distant silhouette of Mount Fuji appears as a small, pale triangle on the horizon line. The artist uses a limited palette to convey the atmosphere of the sea, employing varying shades of blue to differentiate the water from the sky.
Technically, the print relies on clean lines and flat areas of colour, which are characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The focus remains on the daily life of maritime transport, capturing a quiet moment of travel rather than a dramatic event. The inclusion of the cargo, visible on the decks of the ships, adds a sense of realism to the scene. This print remains a clear example of how Hokusai integrated human activity with the natural environment, maintaining a balance between the man-made vessels and the vastness of the sea. The work is part of a larger series that explores the mountain from various perspectives, seasons, and weather conditions, reflecting the artist's fascination with the iconic peak.
