A serene, square-format study of the Schloss Kammer, capturing the shimmering reflections of the castle and garden on the surface of the Attersee.
Gustav Klimt painted this work during his summer retreats at the Attersee in Upper Austria. Between 1900 and 1916, the artist spent nearly every summer in the region, finding respite from the social demands of Vienna. This specific composition focuses on the architecture of the Schloss Kammer, a castle situated on the northern shore of the lake.
Klimt employs a square format, a choice he favoured for his later works. The painting is divided into two distinct zones. The upper portion displays the yellow facade of the castle, partially obscured by dense foliage and garden blooms. The lower portion captures the surface of the lake, which acts as a mirror for the architecture and the surrounding trees. The artist uses a pointillist-inspired technique, applying small, distinct dabs of paint to construct the image. This method creates a shimmering effect, particularly on the water, where the reflection of the castle is broken into fragmented, abstract shapes.
Unlike his earlier, highly decorative portraits, this work demonstrates a shift toward a more observational approach to nature. The colours are muted, relying on a palette of ochre, sage green, and soft earth tones. The lack of a traditional horizon line flattens the perspective, drawing the viewer into the texture of the paint itself. Klimt often used a telescope to study the architecture from a distance, which contributed to the compressed, almost graphic quality of the scene. The result is a quiet, meditative study of light and reflection, capturing the specific atmosphere of the Austrian countryside during the early twentieth century.
