An iconic 1896 Art Nouveau lithograph by Alphonse Mucha, created for the twentieth Salon des Cent exhibition in Paris.
This lithographic poster by Alphonse Mucha advertises the twentieth exhibition of the Salon des Cent, held in Paris during March and April of 1896. The Salon des Cent was a series of exhibitions organised by the journal La Plume, which provided a platform for artists to display their work outside the traditional academic system. Mucha, a central figure in the Art Nouveau movement, produced this design to capture the aesthetic spirit of the period.
The composition features a central female figure, rendered with the flowing, organic lines characteristic of Mucha's style. Her hair cascades in long, decorative waves, framing her profile as she rests her chin upon her hand. She holds a quill and a brush, symbols of the artistic endeavour celebrated by the exhibition. The background incorporates a bold red panel behind the figure, contrasting with the warm, golden-yellow tones that dominate the rest of the image. Small, star-like motifs are scattered across her torso, adding a whimsical, celestial quality to the design.
Typography is integrated into the composition, with Mucha's signature hand-drawn lettering forming the title and exhibition details at the top and bottom of the print. The text is stylised to match the curves of the illustration, creating a unified visual field. The poster reflects the commercial application of fine art during the late nineteenth century, where high-quality graphic design became accessible to the public through mass-produced lithography. Mucha's ability to combine decorative elements with human form made his work highly recognisable and sought after in Parisian circles. This print captures the essence of the Belle Époque, where art and daily life merged through the medium of the poster.
