A fine eighteenth-century etching by Antoine Aveline, featuring a pastoral scene set against an elaborate rocaille fountain.
This etching by Antoine Aveline, after a design by François-Thomas Mondon, captures the essence of the French Rococo period. The composition features a central rocaille element, a characteristic shell-like or rock-work motif that defined the decorative arts of the eighteenth century. The asymmetrical, fluid curves of the stone structure provide a dramatic backdrop for the pastoral scene below.
In the foreground, a group of herders rests near the base of the fountain. The figures are rendered with the light, graceful touch typical of the era, reflecting the period's preference for idyllic, rustic themes. The contrast between the rigid, architectural nature of the rocaille and the soft, organic forms of the figures creates a balanced visual tension. The inclusion of a small dog and the gentle flow of water from the fountain add a sense of life to the scene.
Antoine Aveline, a member of a prominent family of Parisian engravers, was known for his technical precision. This work, marked with the phrase 'Avec privilege du Roy', indicates it was produced under royal authority, a common practice for high-quality prints of the time. The etching demonstrates the skill required to translate complex decorative designs into a medium suitable for wide distribution among the aristocracy and the burgeoning middle class. The work serves as a record of the aesthetic priorities of the mid-eighteenth century, where nature and artifice were combined to create a sense of harmony and leisure. The fine line work and the careful shading of the rock formations demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship expected from Aveline's workshop. This print remains a clear example of the ornamental style that dominated European interiors during the reign of Louis XV.
