A 1995 lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring fluid blue washes and gestural marks that explore the interaction of colour and form.
Reflections V is a lithograph produced by Helen Frankenthaler in 1995. This work demonstrates the artist's mastery of the soak-stain technique, adapted here for the print medium. Frankenthaler was a central figure in the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Colour Field painting, and her approach to printmaking often involved a dialogue between controlled technical processes and the fluid, spontaneous nature of her painting practice.
The composition is dominated by deep, saturated blues that suggest the depth of water or the atmospheric quality of a night sky. Within this field, lighter, gestural marks create a sense of movement. A vertical, textured green form provides a sharp contrast to the surrounding blue washes, acting as a point of visual tension. The edges of the central image are soft and irregular, a characteristic feature of Frankenthaler's work that avoids rigid boundaries and encourages the eye to move across the surface.
Frankenthaler often collaborated with master printers to achieve the specific transparency and layering required for her vision. In this piece, the layering of ink creates a sense of depth, despite the two-dimensional nature of the print. The work avoids literal representation, instead focusing on the emotional and physical properties of colour and form. It is an example of her later career, where she continued to explore the possibilities of abstraction through various media. The print captures the essence of her process, where the interaction between the artist and the materials remains visible in the final result. The balance between the expansive blue areas and the more focused, linear marks creates a rhythm that is both calm and active.
