A geometric abstraction by Max Bill, featuring a diamond-shaped composition of concentric violet and blue colour fields.
Max Bill, a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, produced this work in 1973. The composition is defined by its diamond orientation, a format Bill frequently employed to explore the relationship between colour, form, and spatial perception. The painting consists of a central square surrounded by concentric bands of varying violet and blue hues, which expand towards the edges of the canvas.
Bill was a student at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he absorbed the principles of functionalism and mathematical precision. His approach to painting is rooted in the belief that art should be constructed from its own inherent elements: colour, space, and light. There is no attempt to represent the physical world. Instead, the work functions as a self-contained system of logical progression. The colour transitions are calculated to create a sense of internal light, where the cooler blue centre appears to recede while the warmer violet tones advance.
This piece demonstrates the artist's rigorous methodology. By using a limited palette and geometric constraints, Bill forces the viewer to focus on the interaction of the shapes. The edges of the forms are sharp, and the application of paint is uniform, removing any trace of the artist's hand. This objective style is characteristic of the Concrete Art movement, which sought to create objects that exist as realities in their own right. The work is a study in balance and proportion, reflecting the artist's lifelong pursuit of clarity through mathematical order. It remains a clear example of his ability to transform simple geometric structures into a complex visual experience through the careful modulation of colour.
