A serene scene of a woman and child in a rowing boat on the Seine, captured with the precise detail and soft light characteristic of late nineteenth-century realism.
Julius LeBlanc Stewart, an American expatriate painter based in Paris, produced this work during a period when he shifted his focus from grand society portraits to more intimate, plein-air subjects. The painting captures a tranquil moment on the river, featuring a woman seated in a small rowing boat, sheltered by a bright red parasol. Beside her, a young boy attends to a fishing rod. The composition relies on the contrast between the muted, natural tones of the riverbank and the striking, saturated red of the parasol, which is mirrored in the calm surface of the water.
Stewart was a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Eduardo Zamacois y Zabala, and his technical precision is evident in the rendering of the water reflections and the textures of the foliage. The scene reflects the late nineteenth-century interest in leisure activities among the middle and upper classes, often depicted in settings removed from the urban bustle of Paris. The light is soft and diffused, suggesting a late afternoon or an overcast day, which allows for a balanced distribution of colour across the canvas. The boat, positioned slightly off-centre, draws the viewer into the quiet narrative of the scene, while the background details of moored barges and distant trees provide a sense of place along the Seine. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to combine academic rigour with the observational qualities of contemporary realism, resulting in a balanced and composed image of river life.
