A formal eighteenth-century engraving by Johann Adam Seupel, depicting the physician and professor Marcus Mappus with his heraldic coat of arms.
This engraving by Johann Adam Seupel depicts Marcus Mappus, a notable physician and professor from Strasbourg. The work follows the conventions of early eighteenth-century portraiture, presenting the subject within a formal oval frame that rests upon a stone-like plinth. Mappus is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the voluminous periwig characteristic of the period, along with clerical or academic robes and a white neckband. His expression is composed, reflecting the gravity expected of a man in his professional position.
Below the oval frame, a cartouche displays the family coat of arms, flanked by decorative scrollwork. The inscription on the plinth identifies the sitter and provides his titles, noting his roles as a doctor of medicine and a senior professor. The text also records his birth in 1632 and his death in 1701, suggesting the print was produced shortly after his passing as a commemorative record. Seupel, a skilled engraver based in Strasbourg, utilised precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to model the facial features and the texture of the wig. The contrast between the dark tones of the clothing and the lighter background within the oval creates a sense of depth, while the architectural elements of the frame provide a stable, formal structure to the composition.
This print is a fine example of the portrait engraving tradition, where the combination of likeness and heraldic detail served to document the status of the individual. The clarity of the line work and the balanced arrangement of the text and image demonstrate the technical proficiency of Seupel. It remains a valuable historical document for those interested in the academic and medical history of the region during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
