A detailed 1659 oil painting by Pieter van Anraedt depicting the departure of Captain Hendrik de Sandra, capturing a moment of domestic and military gravity.
Pieter van Anraedt, a painter active in the Dutch Republic during the seventeenth century, produced this large-scale work in 1659. The composition depicts the departure of Captain Hendrik de Sandra, a military figure of the era, as he takes leave of his family. The scene is set before a grand architectural structure, where the Captain stands with his wife, who is dressed in a shimmering white gown. Their children are positioned nearby, adding a domestic element to the military narrative.
The painting is characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age, employing a sombre, earthy palette that emphasises the gravity of the moment. Van Anraedt uses light to draw attention to the central figures, while the surrounding cavalry and horses recede into the darker, atmospheric background. The sky, filled with heavy, dramatic clouds, suggests the uncertainty of the journey ahead. The inclusion of a dog in the foreground and the precise rendering of the period costumes provide a sense of historical immediacy.
Van Anraedt is known for his portraits and group compositions, often commissioned by the affluent merchant and military classes of the time. This work functions as a record of social status and familial duty. The technical execution shows a mastery of texture, particularly in the depiction of the satin fabric of the wife's dress and the leather of the military equipment. The painting remains a significant example of how Dutch artists of the period balanced individual portraiture with the conventions of history painting, creating works that were both personal and public in their intent. The scale of the canvas allows for a detailed exploration of the figures, each contributing to the narrative of separation and duty.
