A direct and expressive ink portrait of the writer Frederik van Eeden, captured by Dutch artist Jan Veth in 1887.
This ink sketch by Jan Veth depicts the Dutch writer and psychiatrist Frederik van Eeden. Executed in 1887, the work captures the subject in a contemplative, downward-facing pose. Veth, a contemporary of the Tachtigers literary movement, often produced portraits of his peers, documenting the intellectual circles of late nineteenth-century Amsterdam. The drawing relies on economical, calligraphic lines to define the structure of the head and the fall of the hair. Veth avoids excessive shading, preferring to suggest form through the direction and weight of his pen strokes. The subject's hand is positioned near his chin, a gesture that reinforces the mood of quiet reflection. The paper shows signs of age, including minor foxing and a vertical fold, which provide a sense of the object's history as a working study. The composition is cropped closely to the head and shoulders, focusing the viewer's attention entirely on the psychological state of the sitter. Veth's approach to portraiture here is direct and unadorned, prioritising the character of the line over painterly finish. The date, inscribed on the right margin, confirms the period of Veth's early career when he was actively engaged with the literary figures of his time. This piece is a clear example of the artist's ability to convey personality through minimal means. It remains a valuable record of the personal connections between Dutch artists and writers during this period.
