Description
A refined woodblock print from the shunga genre by Kitagawa Utamaro, featuring elegant figures in a domestic setting.
This woodblock print originates from the shunga genre, a category of Japanese erotic art that flourished during the Edo period. Kitagawa Utamaro, a master of the ukiyo-e tradition, produced this work as part of a larger illustrated book. The composition demonstrates his characteristic focus on the human form, specifically the elegant, elongated proportions of his female subjects.
The scene depicts an intimate interaction between a man and a woman, framed within a domestic interior. Utamaro employs clean, precise lines to define the figures and the surrounding architectural elements, such as the sliding shoji screens. The inclusion of subtle patterns on the garments and the placement of everyday objects, like the tea set, provide a sense of realism to the setting. The text integrated into the composition serves as a narrative accompaniment, typical of the enpon format where image and literature function in tandem to convey the story.
Utamaro is recognised for his ability to capture psychological nuance through facial expressions and posture. In this print, the interaction between the two figures is conveyed through their proximity and the gentle gesture of the woman offering a cup. The monochromatic nature of the print allows the viewer to focus on the graphic quality of the lines and the balance of the composition. As a piece of historical ephemera, this work offers insight into the social and cultural practices of the pleasure quarters in eighteenth-century Japan. It remains a significant example of the technical skill involved in woodblock printing during this era, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in highly refined visual narratives.

Artist Biography
Kitagawa Utamaro
Utamaro was arrested in 1804 for making prints depicting the sixteenth-century military ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He was manacled for fifty days. He died two years later, at roughly fifty-three. The connection between the punishment and the death is debated, but the timing suggests something broke.
Almost nothing is certain about his early life. He was born around 1753, possibly in Edo, possibly in Kyoto, possibly in Kawagoe. He began publishing prints in the 1770s under the guidance of the publisher Tsutaya Juzaburo, who recognised what Utamaro could do with a portrait of a woman.
What he could do was unprecedented. He invented the okubi-e format: large head-and-shoulders portraits of individual women, mostly from the Yoshiwara pleasure district, printed in close-up with minimal background. Before Utamaro, bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) showed groups of figures in full length. He isolated the face, the tilt of the head, the expression. The prints are psychologically specific in a way that had not existed in Japanese printmaking.
He also published books of insect studies and volumes of shunga (erotica), and he made portraits of ordinary town women, not just courtesans. Ohisa and Okita, two shopgirls who appeared in his Three Beauties of the Present Day, became famous across Edo because of his prints. He turned real people into celebrities, which may be the first documented instance of an artist functioning as a kind of media platform.
Tsutaya Juzaburo died in 1797. Utamaro was reportedly devastated. Some critics feel his work never reached the same level afterward. He produced over two thousand prints in his career.
