A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting travellers resting at a teahouse in Otsu, part of his series on the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene at a teahouse in Otsu, a station along the Tokaido road. The composition captures the daily activity of travellers resting during their journey between Edo and Kyoto. Hokusai focuses on the domestic details of the establishment, showing a server offering refreshments to a seated patron while other figures attend to a water feature in the foreground. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to organise complex human interactions within a confined architectural space.
The Tokaido road served as a primary artery for travel and commerce in Edo-period Japan, and it became a popular subject for artists of the Ukiyo-e school. Hokusai produced this series early in the nineteenth century, employing a narrative approach that prioritises the human element over the topographical features often seen in later interpretations of the same route. The figures are rendered with expressive gestures, and the interior setting is defined by clear, linear boundaries that guide the viewer through the scene.
Technically, the print reflects the standard production methods of the period, using multiple woodblocks to apply colour to the paper. The palette remains restrained, relying on soft tones to define the clothing and the wooden structure of the teahouse. Hokusai uses a combination of solid colour fields and patterned areas to create visual variety without overwhelming the composition. This work offers a glimpse into the social life of the Tokaido, documenting the transient nature of travel and the hospitality provided to those on the road. The print remains a record of the cultural and social habits of the era, presented through the distinct aesthetic lens of one of Japan's most prolific printmakers.
