A striking 1889 study of olive trees in Provence, featuring the characteristic expressive brushwork and golden light of Vincent van Gogh.
Painted in 1889 during his stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this work captures the gnarled, rhythmic forms of olive trees against a radiant, sun-drenched sky. Vincent van Gogh produced a series of studies focusing on the olive groves surrounding the clinic, finding in their twisted trunks and silver-green foliage a subject that allowed for intense experimentation with colour and brushwork.
The composition is dominated by the contrast between the warm, golden hues of the sky and the cooler, blue-toned shadows cast upon the earth. The sun, depicted as a glowing orb, radiates light through short, directional brushstrokes that create a sense of movement across the canvas. The trees themselves are rendered with thick, impasto applications of paint, their trunks twisting in organic, almost human-like gestures. In the background, the faint, cool outlines of the Alpilles mountains provide a structural anchor to the otherwise fluid and energetic scene.
Van Gogh used this subject to explore the relationship between the natural world and his own internal state. The repetition of the brushstrokes across the sky and ground unifies the image, drawing the eye across the grove. This piece demonstrates his ability to transform a familiar rural scene into a highly personal vision through the application of colour theory and rhythmic mark-making. The work remains a primary example of his late period, where his technique became increasingly expressive and liberated from strict representational accuracy. The physical texture of the original paint is translated here into a high-quality fine art print, preserving the energy of his original application.
