A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting sailing vessels at the Miya station along the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Miya, a significant stop along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. The composition focuses on two traditional Japanese sailing vessels navigating coastal waters. Hokusai employs a clear, graphic approach to the ships, using precise lines to define the wooden hulls and the tension of the sails. The water is rendered with rhythmic, repetitive patterns that suggest movement without attempting realistic depth.
In the background, a distant shoreline is sketched with minimal detail, providing a sense of scale and geography. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochre tones for the boats and land, contrasted against a pale, pinkish wash that suggests the light of dawn or dusk. This print belongs to a series that documented the various locations along the Tokaido route, a popular subject for artists of the Edo period.
Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, Hokusai's interpretation of the Tokaido stations often emphasises the structural form of the subjects. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hokusai, as seen in the clean registration of the blocks and the subtle application of colour. The work remains a clear example of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus is on the observation of travel, commerce, and the daily life of the Japanese people during the nineteenth century. The print is presented here as a museum-grade reproduction, maintaining the original proportions and the specific aesthetic qualities of the woodblock medium.
