A 1962 abstract oil painting by British artist Terry Frost, featuring geometric forms and structural lines inspired by the St Ives aesthetic.
Terry Frost, a central figure in the St Ives School, produced this work during a period of significant creative output in 1962. The composition reflects his interest in the interplay between geometric form and the physical environment of Cornwall. Frost often drew inspiration from the light, the sea, and the structural elements of his surroundings, translating these observations into a language of abstraction.
In this piece, the title 'Stays' refers to the structural lacing visible in the centre of the canvas. This linear element acts as a vertical anchor, dividing the space while simultaneously connecting the two large, beige-toned forms that dominate the lower half of the composition. The upper section introduces a contrast in both colour and shape, featuring two distinct, rounded rectangular forms in red and black. These shapes float against a pale, neutral background, creating a sense of balance and tension.
Frost employs a restrained palette, allowing the focus to remain on the relationship between the shapes and the negative space. The application of paint is deliberate, with areas of raw canvas left visible, which adds a tactile quality to the surface. The thin, precise lines of the lacing contrast with the broader, flatter areas of colour, demonstrating his ability to manipulate visual weight. This work is representative of his mid-career style, where he moved away from purely representational subjects toward a more distilled, rhythmic abstraction. The composition avoids unnecessary detail, relying instead on the clarity of form and the careful arrangement of elements to communicate a sense of order and structure. It is a clear example of his method of distilling complex visual experiences into essential, geometric components.
