A 1966 Color Field painting by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring expansive, stained areas of mauve, green, and yellow on raw canvas.
Mauve District, created in 1966, represents the mature phase of Helen Frankenthaler's career. During this period, she moved away from the oil-based washes of her earlier work, such as Mountains and Sea, and began experimenting with acrylic paints. This shift allowed for greater control over the saturation and opacity of the pigment while maintaining the fluid, stained quality that defined her approach to the canvas.
The composition is defined by large, unmodulated areas of colour that interact across the surface. A dominant, expansive field of mauve occupies the centre, flanked by a vertical strip of green on the left and a horizontal band of yellow at the base. The raw, unprimed canvas remains visible in the negative space between these forms, acting as a structural element rather than a mere background. This technique, often referred to as soak-stain, integrates the paint directly into the weave of the fabric, removing the physical texture of brushstrokes and emphasising the flatness of the picture plane.
Frankenthaler's work from the mid-1960s reflects a move toward harder edges and more deliberate geometric arrangements, yet she retains the spontaneity inherent in her process. The edges of the colour fields are soft, showing the bleeding effect of the acrylic medium as it absorbed into the fibres. By stripping away representational imagery, the artist directs the viewer's attention to the physical properties of the paint and the relationship between the chosen hues. The work functions as a study in spatial tension, where the weight of the mauve block is balanced by the surrounding colours. This piece is a clear example of the formal rigour that characterised the Color Field movement, where the interaction of colour and space becomes the primary subject of the work.
