A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting the coastal station of Maisaka, featuring travellers and boats along the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Maisaka, a coastal stop along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. Hokusai produced this series during the early nineteenth century, focusing on the daily activities of travellers and the specific geography of the route. The composition features a shoreline where figures in traditional conical hats attend to small boats laden with cargo. The water is rendered with rhythmic, repeating lines that suggest movement and current, while the distant pine-covered islands provide a sense of spatial depth.
Hokusai employs a restricted palette, utilising soft pinks for the clouds and sun, alongside muted greens and ochres for the terrain. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance human activity with the natural environment. The stylised clouds, a common motif in Japanese printmaking of this period, frame the scene and guide the viewer's eye across the composition. The figures are depicted with minimal detail, yet their postures and interactions convey the routine nature of travel and commerce at this coastal crossing. The print reflects the broader interest in travel and regional geography that defined the Ukiyo-e genre during the Edo period. By focusing on the specific atmosphere of Maisaka, Hokusai captures a moment of quiet industry against the backdrop of the Japanese coast. This work is a clear example of the technical precision required in woodblock printing, where each colour layer is applied from a separate carved block to achieve the final image.
