A terracotta sculpture by Leonardo da Vinci depicting a tender, naturalistic interaction between the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus.
This terracotta sculpture, attributed to the early career of Leonardo da Vinci, captures a moment of domestic intimacy between the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus. Unlike the formal, static depictions common in the period, this work focuses on the naturalistic interaction between mother and son. The child is shown with a distinct, joyful expression, his body twisting in a lively manner as he reaches towards his mother.
The Virgin is depicted with a serene, downward gaze, her head covered by a simple veil that falls in soft folds over her shoulders. The drapery of her garments is rendered with attention to the weight and texture of the fabric, creating deep shadows that define the form of her seated figure. The terracotta medium allows for a tactile quality, showing the marks of the artist's hands in the modelling of the surfaces.
Leonardo's interest in human anatomy and the mechanics of movement is evident here, even in his early work. The child's posture, with one leg drawn up and the other extended, suggests a study of real-life observation rather than a reliance on traditional iconographic models. The sculpture demonstrates a departure from the rigid styles of the Quattrocento, moving towards the fluid, lifelike compositions that would define the High Renaissance. The monochromatic nature of the clay focuses the viewer on the interplay of light and shadow across the forms, a technique Leonardo would later master in his paintings. This piece provides a rare glimpse into the sculptural practice of an artist primarily known for his work on panel and paper, offering a three-dimensional perspective on his early artistic development.
