A study in light and transparency by Bauhaus master László Moholy-Nagy, exploring the interaction between industrial materials and optical phenomena.
László Moholy-Nagy, a central figure of the Bauhaus school, investigated the intersection of technology, light, and space throughout his career. This work, Light painting on hinged celluloid (position 1), represents his experimentation with transparency and the physical manipulation of light. By utilising celluloid as a medium, Moholy-Nagy moved beyond traditional two-dimensional surfaces, allowing light to pass through, reflect, and refract across the hinged planes.
The composition relies on the interplay between the material structure and the shadows it casts. The left panel features a fluid, organic form, while the right panel displays a series of precise, linear markings. These elements create a dialogue between the rigid geometry of the construction and the ephemeral nature of the light patterns. The hinge mechanism allows for multiple configurations, meaning the work is not a static object but a system for generating visual phenomena.
Moholy-Nagy viewed the camera and light-sensitive materials as tools to expand human perception. In this piece, he treats the celluloid as a canvas for light itself. The resulting image captures a moment of this process, where the physical object disappears into a play of tone and shadow. This approach aligns with his broader interest in the 'New Vision', which sought to document the world through unconventional angles and materials. The work avoids representational subject matter, focusing instead on the fundamental properties of optics and industrial materials. It is a study in how light can define form, create depth, and alter the viewer's understanding of space. By documenting these light paintings, Moholy-Nagy bridged the gap between sculpture, photography, and kinetic art, demonstrating his belief that art should reflect the technological realities of the modern age.
