A striking 1892 woodcut by Félix Vallotton, featuring the stark, high-contrast geometry of the Mont Blanc massif.
Félix Vallotton, a member of the Nabis group, produced this woodcut in 1892. It is part of a series of graphic works that demonstrate his mastery of the medium. The composition relies on the stark contrast between black and white, a technique that defines his contribution to the revival of woodcut printing at the end of the nineteenth century. By stripping away mid-tones and grey scales, Vallotton forces the viewer to engage with the essential geometry of the alpine terrain.
The image captures the jagged peaks and deep crevices of the mountain range. Vallotton uses directional lines to suggest the movement of snow and the texture of rock faces. The heavy black areas create a sense of depth, while the white spaces represent the snow-covered surfaces. This approach is characteristic of his work, which often prioritises graphic clarity over atmospheric realism. The inclusion of the title in a cartouche at the bottom and his initials in the corner are typical of his printmaking practice.
Vallotton was instrumental in moving away from the reproductive wood engraving style popular in the nineteenth century. Instead, he embraced the bold, flat aesthetic of Japanese ukiyo-e prints. This work is a clear example of his ability to reduce a complex natural subject to its most basic visual components. The result is a stark, modern representation of the mountain that remains visually arresting today. The print is a fine example of how limited technical means can produce a powerful visual effect through careful composition and the deliberate use of negative space.
