A detailed lithograph from 1829 depicting King William I of the Netherlands providing directions to two men on a city street.
This lithograph by Jean Baptiste Ambroise Marcellin Jobard depicts a scene of civic interaction involving King William I of the Netherlands. The composition captures a moment of everyday courtesy, where the monarch provides directions to two men on a cobblestone street. The architectural backdrop features a series of windows and stone bollards, rendered with precise, controlled lines characteristic of early nineteenth-century lithographic techniques.
Jobard, a Belgian lithographer and inventor, was active during a period when the medium was gaining popularity for its ability to reproduce tonal variations and fine detail. The work is titled '4e Rencontre' (Fourth Encounter) and includes a dialogue in French at the base, which adds a narrative layer to the visual encounter. The figures are dressed in the formal attire of the era, including frock coats and top hats, reflecting the social conventions of the time. The king is shown in a relaxed, approachable posture, gesturing towards a path, while the two men listen with hats in hand, indicating a respectful exchange.
Technically, the print demonstrates the capabilities of stone lithography to create soft shading and depth. The artist uses cross-hatching and stippling to define the textures of the clothing and the uneven surface of the street. The scene is devoid of excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of the interaction and the characterisation of the figures. This piece offers a glimpse into the public image of the monarchy during the early nineteenth century, presenting the king as a helpful and accessible figure within the urban environment. The print is a fine example of the genre scenes that were widely circulated in the period, serving both as a record of social manners and a demonstration of the technical refinement achieved by lithographers in the Low Countries.
