A nineteenth-century lithograph depicting King William I in a domestic encounter with a peasant family, rendered with fine tonal detail.
This lithograph by Jean Baptiste Ambroise Marcellin Jobard depicts a scene of royal interaction within a humble domestic setting. The composition centres on King William I, who is shown seated at a simple wooden table, engaged in conversation with a peasant woman. The woman, dressed in traditional rural attire, sits to the left with a bowl in her lap, while two small children play at her feet. The interior is sparse, featuring a large fireplace, a musket mounted on the wall, and basic furniture, which serves to contrast the status of the monarch with the modest circumstances of the family.
Jobard, a French lithographer and inventor who spent much of his career in Brussels, utilised the lithographic medium to capture the tonal variations of the scene. The shading around the fireplace and the textures of the clothing demonstrate the technical capabilities of early nineteenth-century printmaking. The work belongs to a series of anecdotal depictions concerning the monarch, often intended to portray him in a benevolent or approachable light. The text inscribed below the image provides context for the interaction, noting the King's promise to support the woman's husband, a former colonel, in his petition. This narrative approach was common in the period, where visual media functioned as a means of publicising the character and actions of political figures. The print offers a glimpse into the social dynamics of the era, where the divide between the ruling class and the agrarian population was bridged through such staged, illustrative encounters. The work remains a document of the visual culture surrounding the Dutch monarchy during the early nineteenth century, reflecting the intersection of political propaganda and genre painting.
