A refined woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicting the deity Jurojin in a domestic scene, showcasing the delicate colour palette of the nishiki-e style.
Suzuki Harunobu was a pioneer of the nishiki-e, or brocade print, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single woodblock composition. This work belongs to the series The Seven Gods of Good Luck in the Floating World, a set that reimagines traditional deities within the contemporary context of the Edo period.
In this print, the figure of Jurojin, the god of longevity, is depicted in a domestic setting. He is shown attending to a woman, an act that subverts the gravity typically associated with such divine figures. Harunobu employs a refined aesthetic, using thin, precise lines to define the figures and their patterned garments. The composition is balanced, with the architectural elements of the room providing a structured frame for the interaction. The circular window, revealing a flowering branch, introduces a sense of depth and connects the interior space to the natural world outside.
Harunobu’s approach to colour is restrained, relying on soft, harmonious tones that complement the delicate nature of the woodblock medium. The print demonstrates his ability to blend classical themes with the everyday life of the floating world. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the print integrates text and image, a common feature in ukiyo-e that adds a layer of narrative context. The figures are rendered with a sense of grace, their postures suggesting a quiet, intimate moment. This print is an example of the technical precision achieved during the mid-eighteenth century in Japan, reflecting the sophisticated printmaking culture of the time.
