A classic example of Josef Albers's Homage to the Square series, exploring the optical interaction of blue and green tones within a nested geometric structure.
Josef Albers began his extensive Homage to the Square series in 1950, continuing this rigorous investigation of colour interaction until his death in 1976. This work features a nested arrangement of squares, a format that allowed Albers to isolate the effects of chromatic juxtaposition. By placing specific hues in proximity, he explored how colours appear to advance, recede, or vibrate against one another, depending on their relative saturation and temperature.
In this particular composition, the cool, light blue outer border provides a neutral frame for the inner squares. A dark, forest green square sits within this perimeter, followed by a lighter, grass green square, and finally a deep, saturated blue square at the centre. The application of paint is precise, reflecting Albers's interest in the mechanical and systematic nature of perception. He applied the paint directly from the tube onto masonite, often using a palette knife to ensure a flat, uniform surface that minimises the presence of the artist's hand.
Albers, a former teacher at the Bauhaus, maintained that colour is the most relative medium in art. He argued that a colour is never seen as it really is, but rather as it is influenced by its neighbours. This series functions as a visual laboratory, stripping away narrative, gesture, and symbolic content to focus entirely on the mechanics of human sight. The rigid, mathematical structure of the squares serves as a constant, allowing the viewer to observe the shifting relationships between the chosen pigments. This print captures the clarity and intellectual rigour of Albers's approach, offering a study in the balance of cool tones and the optical tension created by their specific arrangement.
