A delicate watercolour and graphite study of the De Pauw estate in Wassenaar by Dutch artist Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn.
This watercolour and graphite study by Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn depicts the country estate known as De Pauw, situated in Wassenaar. Kleijn, a Dutch painter active during the nineteenth century, frequently documented the rural architecture and estates of the Netherlands. His approach here is one of restraint, prioritising the structural clarity of the building against the soft, atmospheric treatment of the surrounding parkland.
The composition is balanced, with the mansion positioned centrally behind a calm body of water. The artist employs a muted palette of ochre, sepia, and pale green, allowing the architectural features of the house to remain the primary focus. The graphite underdrawing is visible in the upper sections, where the trees are sketched with light, gestural marks. This technique provides a sense of openness and airiness, typical of mid-nineteenth-century topographical studies intended for private collections or architectural records.
The mansion itself is rendered with precise, controlled brushwork, capturing the classical proportions of the facade. The reflection of the building in the water adds a layer of depth to the scene, while the surrounding foliage is suggested through washes of colour rather than rigid detail. This work offers a glimpse into the Dutch tradition of estate portraiture, where the relationship between the built environment and the natural surroundings is carefully observed. The paper remains largely unworked in the sky and water, creating a sense of quietude and space. It is a characteristic example of Kleijn's ability to combine technical accuracy with a gentle, observational quality, capturing the specific character of the Wassenaar estate during a period of relative tranquillity.
