A satirical 1888 drawing by James Ensor, depicting a group of bourgeois figures oblivious to the spectral, plague-ridden atmosphere surrounding them.
James Ensor, a Belgian artist known for his biting social commentary and grotesque imagery, produced this work in 1888. The drawing, titled 'Peste dessu, peste dessu, peste partout' (Plague above, plague below, plague everywhere), captures the artist's cynical view of bourgeois society. Ensor frequently employed satire to critique the hypocrisy and moral decay he perceived in his contemporaries.
In this composition, a group of well-dressed figures sits on a bench, seemingly oblivious to the chaotic and spectral elements surrounding them. A monstrous, cloud-like face looms in the upper left, watching the scene with a menacing expression. The juxtaposition of the mundane, middle-class subjects with these nightmarish, supernatural figures is characteristic of Ensor's approach. His line work is rapid and energetic, utilising graphite to define the figures and light washes of coloured pencil to add a ghostly, ethereal quality to the atmosphere.
Ensor often used his art to express personal frustration and social alienation. By placing the figures in a state of calm while surrounded by signs of plague or spiritual corruption, he creates a tension between the reality of the subjects and the unseen forces of decay. The work functions as a visual manifestation of his internal world, where the boundaries between the everyday and the macabre are blurred. This piece provides a clear example of the artist's ability to blend observational drawing with imaginative, often disturbing, narrative elements. It remains a significant example of his graphic output, demonstrating his technical skill and his uncompromising perspective on the human condition during the late nineteenth century.
